azul

blue — the color of a clear skycolor del cielo despejado

Comes from Arabic

lāzaward

“lapis lazuli”«el lapislázuli»

Arabic today says

azraq

The article

It came in without the article.

Arabic itself had taken it from Persian.

The story

From the blue stone lāzaward (Persian lāzhward), whose initial l- was mistaken for an article and dropped: el lazur > el azur, azul. The resemblance to Arabic azraq is a coincidence.
