berenjena

eggplant, auberginehortaliza de piel morada

Comes from Arabic

بَاذِنْجَانَة

bādhinjāna

“an eggplant”«una berenjena»

Arabic today says

بَاذِنْجَان

bādhinjān

And it still does

The article

It came in without the article.

Arabic itself had taken it from Persian, which took it from Sanskrit.

The story

Arabic took it from Persian bādengān. In al-Andalus dh was pronounced d, and that d ended up as r: bādhinjāna > berenjena.El árabe la tomó del persa bādengān. En al-Andalus la dh se pronunciaba d, y esa d acabó en r: bādhinjāna > berenjena.

In a sentence

Me encanta la berenjena asada.

I love roasted eggplant.

أُحِبُّ البَاذِنْجَانَ المَشْوِيّ.
