Alicante

port city in the Valencian Community (Alacant in Valencian)ciudad portuaria de la Comunidad Valenciana (en valenciano Alacant)

Comes from Arabic

اللَّقَنْت

al-laqant

“Arabic name of Roman Lucentum”«nombre árabe de la Lucentum romana»

Arabic today says

لَقَنْت

laqant

And it still does

The article

Spanish kept the Arabic article al- glued to the word.

Arabic itself had taken it from Latin.

The story

Lucentum (perhaps related to the Greek Akra Leuke, "white cape") gave Arabic Laqant, which also appears with the article, al-Laqant; that form with al- explains Valencian Alacant and Spanish Alicante (formerly Alacante). Arabic was the bridge, not the origin.
