The article

It came in without the article.

Arabic itself had taken it from Greek.

The story

Some derive it from Andalusi Arabic qītāra, from Greek kithára; others say it came straight from Latin cithara through Romance, never passing through Arabic. Whichever the route, modern Arabic has borrowed it back from Europe: غيتار.
