The article

Spanish kept the Arabic article al- glued to the word.

Arabic itself had taken it from Persian.

The story

It comes not from an Arabic word but from a person's name: al-Khwarizmi, a 9th-century Baghdad mathematician; his Latinized name, algorismus, blended with Greek arithmós (number). The DLE instead proposes Arabic ḥisāb al-ghubār, "calculation with numerals"; most etymologists prefer al-Khwarizmi. Modern Arabic has reclaimed it: خوارزمية.
