The story
Almería certainly comes from al-Mariyya (founded in 955 as al-Mariyya Bajjāna). The meaning is disputed: the popular version is "the watchtower", others link it to mirʾā, "mirror" ("mirror of the sea"), and some look for a pre-Arabic name. No explanation prevails.
