The article
Spanish kept the Arabic article al- glued to the word.
The story
Arabic sh is a sun letter: al-sharqiyya is pronounced ash-sharqiyya, and the old x (which sounded like sh) preserves it: A-xarquía. Egypt today has a governorate with the same name, ash-Sharqiyya.
